The Mortorium a 5 by Johann Georg Linike is preserved in manuscript form in the Mecklenburgische Landesbibliothek, Schwerin. The unusual title would seem to imply that the work was written to be performed at a funeral service, all instruments being required to play "con sordini" but a closer examination of the music itself reveals it to be nothing more than a secular sonata. The style is rather similar to Telemann in many ways although the combination of instruments which includes an E flat trumpet is extremely rare and one is reminded of the Bach Brandenburg Concerto which is scored for the same group of soloists. This work, which has been given the more meaningful title of sonata by the editor is published here for the first time and is Linike's only known composition for the trumpet.
