The melancholy yet alluring melody conjures images of an old carousel that is cursed or haunted by spirits. From the eerie harmonies of the opening to the more spirited melodies that follow, this work takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotions as they experience the many moods of the haunted carousel. Pedagogically, the work introduces high 3 fingerings and accidentals. Sure to be a concert favorite. The iconic symbol and popular favorite ride at fairs and theme parks is the carousel. Complete with carnival music and horses or other animals that "gallop" up and down, the carousel possibly dates as far back as 500 A.D. and was used first for training military horseman. Some of the old carousels that have been around for decades or longer can be quite haunting. They have always fascinated me with their history, places traveled, and the master craftsmanship and incredible detail that make them works of art. At the same time, old carousels in particular can seem a bit creepy which may stem from some stereotypes of carnivals and from film and TV that frequently depict them as cursed or haunted by spirits. Slightly more advanced than Beginning Strings, this series begins to involve more position work and a slightly more complex rhythmic figures. Rehearsal piano is often provided.
