Sibelius wrote this trio for violin, cello and piano in the summer of 1888 at the villa of his aunt in Lovisa, his favourite summer retreat. It was written for the family trio in which Jean played the violin, his sister the piano and his brother the cello. In this work Sibelius has left classicism behind and adopted an air of melancholy romanticism.

Sibelius napísal toto trio pre husle, violončelo a klavír v lete roku 1888 vo vile jeho tety v Lovisa, svoje obľúbené letné sídlo. To bolo napísané pre rodinné trio, v ktorom Jean hral na husle, jeho sestra klavír a jeho brat violončelo. V tejto práci Sibelius opustil klasicizmus za sebou a prijal ovzdušia melanchólia romantizmu.
