The dissonances, held up against the backdrop of humorous expression, are easily understood. The Etude combines pleasurable elements of concerto style with impressionistic colorfulness. The impressionist idiom can also be heard in the Prologue, standing in contrast here to recitative sections. Advanced pupils and students will come to terms with the technical difficulties, professional pianists will enjoy the specifically virtuosic aspects of this work.
